‘Opposing the genocide in Gaza is not antisemitic or terrorism’

The proscription of Palestine Action is illegitimate and unethical, say 300 Jewish people, including Sir Geoffrey Bindman KC, Mike Leigh, Michael Rosen and Gillian Slovo, in letter to Starmer

LEADING British Jews will deliver a letter to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer on Tuesday condemning the proscription of Palestine Action as “illegitimate and unethical.”

A delegation will deliver the letter signed by about 300 people, including human rights solicitor Sir Geoffrey Bindman KC, Bafta-winning screenwriter and director Mike Leigh, and authors Michael Rosen and Gillian Slovo.

The letter addressed to Sir Keir and Home Secretary Yvette Cooper reads: “We are Jews who oppose the genocide by Israel against the Palestinian people, the reality of which is agonisingly on show every day on radio, television and social media.

“Opposing the brutality of genocide, apartheid, and ethnic cleansing taking place in Gaza and the West Bank, including taking direct action, is not antisemitic. Nor is it terrorism.

“We consider the proscription of Palestine Action as illegitimate and unethical.

“We oppose genocide as human beings. We oppose it because we are Jews who have learnt from our history to be vigilant against injustice and stand up for justice for all people, everywhere.”

The signatories call on the government to “stop deflecting attention from genocide by linking non-violent protest to terrorism,” and instead use its influence to help end genocide and bring justice for the Palestinian people.

They urge Britain to immediately recognise Palestinian statehood, suspend the trade agreement with Israel, impose sanctions, end arms exports and ban imports.

Sir Keir said last week that Britain would recognise Palestine as a state unless Israel allows more aid into Gaza, halts land annexation in the West Bank, agrees to a ceasefire, and commits to a long-term peace process within two months.

“It is time to end the government’s handwringing over the level of slaughter and suffering in Gaza and the West Bank, mixed with tacit support to the Israeli state,” the letter concluded.

A rally will take place outside Downing Street as the letter is delivered, with speakers including former ANC MP Andrew Feinstein, historian Joseph Finlay, documentary maker Gillian Mosely, and comedian Alexei Sayle.

Jewish Voice for Labour chairwoman and lead organiser of the letter, Jenny Manson, said: “We are Jews horrified by the genocide being carried out by Israel against the Palestinian people.

“For us, ‘Never again’ does not mean only crimes against Jews, but Never Again by anyone to anyone.”

She said they will be standing together in Whitehall on Tuesday between 2pm and 4pm, to demonstrate “our horror at Israel’s actions and to call on our government to take real action now.”

Palestine Action was proscribed as a terrorist group last month, following an action at RAF Brize Norton on June 20 that caused £7 million of damage to two Voyager planes.

The group targets arms manufacturers supplying weapons to Israel.

Today, Muhammad Umer Khalid, 22, became the fifth person to be remanded in custody over his alleged involvement in the action.

He is charged with conspiracy to commit criminal damage and conspiracy to enter a prohibited site for purposes harmful to national safety or interests.

More arrests are expected in connection with the case, prosecutor Peter Ratliff told Westminster Magistrates’ Court today.
