Nine migrants on the stranded Open Arms ship jump overboard in attempt to swim to Lampedusa
Every European person should take Salvini's treatment of the Open Arms and the people on board as a personal offence, Sea Watch says
Italian Finance Police rescue a migrant who jumped off the Spanish humanitarian rescue ship Open Arms in a desperate bid to reach the shore of the Sicilian island of Lampedusa, southern Italy, tantalisingly near after 19 days blocked on board in deteriorating conditions by Italy's refusal to open its ports

THE situation on board the Open Arms NGO migrant rescue ship off the coast of Lampedusa took a dramatic turn for the worse today as nine migrants jumped overboard and attempted to swim ashore.

In a video shared by the Spanish charity this afternoon several people are seen swimming away from the boat before they are intercepted by an Italian coastguard ship and an Open Arms dinghy.

As medics & humanitarians, our #MSF team onboard #OceanViking hears with grave concerns reports about the deteriorating situation on #OpenArms.

Prolonged standoffs at sea can have grave physical & psychological implications for rescued people, who have already suffered enough. pic.twitter.com/82fP96hv1I
