MPs are to probe how prisons and probation are being run in Wales, the Commons Welsh affairs committee has said.

Although the Westminster government is responsible for criminal justice in Wales, the Welsh administration runs overlapping services like health, housing and education.

The committee will take evidence from a range of groups on how joined-up the two governments are on rehabilitating offenders and on how Westminster takes Welsh requirements into account.

It will also investigate the state of Welsh prisons and the impact of the absence of a women’s prison in Wales.

Committee chairwoman Ruth Jones, MP for Newport West and Islwyn, said: “England and Wales are often treated the same when it comes to prisons and rehabilitation, but Wales has its own unique challenges.

“Our inquiry will take a broad look at how justice is being delivered in Wales. Is enough being done to keep Welsh offenders and the public safe?”
