MORE than 30 MPs have backed a Commons motion strongly challenging PM Sir Keir Starmer’s response to the US aggression against Venezuela.
The motion, tabled by Leeds East MP Richard Burgon, “calls on the UK government to unequivocally condemn this unjustified act of aggression against Venezuela, to uphold the United Nations Charter and international law, and not to abandon these core principles in order to appease President Trump.”
Most MPs backing the motion, which “condemns in the strongest terms the military aggression ordered by Donald Trump against Venezuela,” are either Labour or left independents, but Plaid Cymru MPs and Liberal Democrat Andrew George are also among them.
Mr Burgon’s motion said the attack “constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter” and highlights the recent US national security strategy as reasserting “colonial-style domination over Latin America.”
The government has come under pressure from many parts of the Commons to toughen up its position, but fear of offending President Trump has prevailed so far.
