BRENDON McCULLUM is confident of being able to work collaboratively with England’s next Test head coach to produce a brighter future for the country in all three formats.

McCullum bounced back from losing his red-ball job with the England and Wales Cricket Board earlier this month to mastermind a first ODI series victory over India since 2018 with a thrilling 27-run win in a dramatic finale at Lord’s on Sunday.

England posted a record List A total at the home of cricket of 387 for three, thanks to Ben Duckett’s 141 along with fifties for Jacob Bethell and Joe Root, before McCullum’s mid-innings chat with white-ball captain Harry Brook helped restrict India to 360 for seven.

India were well-placed with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma at the crease, but the McCullum-inspired decision to turn to the part-time spin of Bethell resulted in Sharma being bowled for a superb 138 before Sam Curran turned the screw with a four-wicket haul.

It has provided a welcome boost to white-ball coach McCullum, who also oversaw a 4-0 T20 series triumph over India this month and, with the ECB expected to interview candidates for the Test vacancy this week, the 44-year-old is positive of developing a strong working relationship with his successor.

Asked how he would potentially handle initially being the junior coach given the Test team require urgent attention in comparison to an improved white-ball set-up, McCullum interjected: “Collaboratively, I think.

“I think once the new coach is put in place, we’ll have a good conversation around everything.

“I think ultimately as long as everyone wants what is right for English cricket, there will be some give and take on certain things. That is the way it is.

“There will be situations where you do have to give and there will be situations where the Test coach will give as well and fundamentally you are trying to get what is right for English cricket.

“I look forward to those conversations when the time comes.”

McCullum also revealed he will have no involvement in his replacement for the red-ball team, who have lost consecutive series at home to New Zealand and away to Australia ahead of next month’s visit of Pakistan for three Tests.

“No, I have enough on my plate trying to work out the white-ball stuff. I’ll respectfully stay in my lane there,” McCullum said.

After Andy Flower ruled himself out of the running on Friday, ex-Australian chief Justin Langer and former England batter Jonathan Trott are among the front-runners.

Both Flower and Langer are set to coach franchise teams in The Hundred, which begins on Tuesday and McCullum will stay in England to watch the 100-ball competition.

He said: “I’ll be around for The Hundred. It will be great to see some of England’s premier white-ball tournament. If you’re white-ball coach, it’s good to be around for that!

“I look forward to seeing not just the guys who are in this [white-ball] squad, but also some of the next talent perform under the bright lights of The Hundred tournament.

“It will be good to be able to see that up close over the next four weeks or so. I’ll look to try and get around to those games to see that and hopefully we see some more talent.”
