London City Lionesses striker Godfrey earns first senior England call-up
England manager Sarina Wiegman during a team announcement at Wembley Stadium, London, November 18, 2025

LONDON CITY LIONESSES striker Freya Godfrey has been called into the England squad for the forthcoming friendlies against China and Ghana.

The 20-year-old, who has scored two Women’s Super League goals this season, is the first player from the Hayes Lane club to be selected by the Lionesses.

Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton misses out with a hamstring injury, while Michelle Agyemang, Alex Greenwood and Leah Williamson are still sidelined.

England face China at Wembley on Saturday, November 29, before a first international meeting with Ghana at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium on December 2.

Manchester City duo Grace Clinton and Lauren Hemp are also back in the group after missing the last two games due to injury, but there is no return yet for Chelsea’s Lauren James.

Boss Sarina Wiegman’s press conference following the squad announcement was dominated by the fall-out from Mary Earps’s autobiography today.

Earps, who retired from international football just five weeks before Euro 2025 after losing her place to Hampton, criticised her fellow goalkeeper and Wiegman in the book.

“I make decisions to win,” Wiegman said. “And what I’ve said all the time is that we have two incredible goalkeepers and at the end I made that decision to the one I came to and that’s what it is for me.

“That’s her book, there’s been a lot of response on it. I don’t think I can react anything more because there’s a lot of private conversations that I always keep private.”
