Legislate to strip titles from Epstein’s pals, say SNP as campaigners demand investigation

A BANNER reading: “Investigate the royals” was unfurled today outside Prince Andrew’s residence, the Royal Lodge in Windsor, to highlight anger that “questions are being ignored.”

Mr Windsor gave up the title Duke of York last week ahead of the publication of the posthumous memoir of Virginia Giuffre, who accused him and New York financier Jeffrey Epstein of sexually abusing her as a teenager. The prince has always denied the allegations.

Ms Giuffre took her own life in April. Mr Windsor continues to be styled Prince Andrew.

Campaigners from Republic staged the stunt to demand that the royal family face an inquiry to uncover what efforts were made to protect the prince.

Republic’s Graham Smith said: “Whenever new revelations have come out, William and Charles have only acted to protect their own positions.”

“At no point have the royals shown any concern for the victims of Epstein or Andrew.

“This has always been about rich and powerful men protecting themselves from accusations levelled at other rich and powerful men.”

The SNP, meanwhile, called for legislation to strip Mr Windsor and Peter Mandelson of their titles to be introduced without “any further excuses and any further delay.”

Despite Lord Mandelson’s well-publicised links with Epstein, both before and after the financier’s 2008 conviction for procuring an under-18 girl for prostitution, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer appointed him as Britain’s ambassador to the United States in February.

He was forced to resign just seven months later following the release of email correspondence reminding the world of his friendship with Epstein, but he remains a Labour peer.

Tabling an early day motion pushing for government action, SNP Westminster leader Stephen Flynn said: “The only real question is what Keir Starmer’s government is waiting for.

“The public knows this is the right thing to do and, even more importantly, the victims at the heart of the Epstein scandal know that it’s the right thing to do. It needs to be done without any further excuses and any further delay.

“Those implicated in the Epstein scandal have been able to escape justice because they have hidden behind their power and privilege.”

Scottish Greens MSP Maggie Chapman argued: “It’s not just the titles that we need to discuss, it is the monarchy as a whole.

“It is an outdated and anti-democratic way to run a country.

“It’s time for us to finally move on from monarchy and build a genuine democracy.”
