Junior doctors in Scotland say they could make more money as coffee shop baristas

JUNIOR doctors in Scotland receive the same pay as coffee shop baristas, with many taking on second jobs to get by, their union revealed today.

The British Medical Association (BMA) said that recently qualified doctors are paid just over £27,500 a year — about £14 an hour  — the same as some staff at coffee and sandwich chain Pret a Manger.

More than 55 per cent of young medics are working extra shifts to get by and a fifth are struggling to pay their rent or mortgage, according to the union’s latest workforce survey.
