Green MSP determined to end anti-choice protests outside health clinics

A GREEN MSP has spoken of her determination to end anti-choice protests outside health clinics for good.

Gillian Mackay made the comments ahead of her giving evidence to Holyrood’s health, social care and sports committee, which is considering her Abortion Services (Safe Access Zones) (Scotland) Bill.

The Bill would create 200 metre “buffer zones” around health facilities offering abortion services, which Ms Mackay hopes will put an end to staff and patients being harassed and intimidated by anti-choice campaigners.

She said: “It is shocking that this legislation is even necessary.

“Abortion rights are healthcare, they are vitally important and were hard-fought for and won.

“People shouldn’t have to face down protests and banners in order to access services they are entitled to.

“These protests have no place in a modern, democratic or feminist Scotland.

“I am determined that we stop these protests for good, and that we ensure nobody else has to face the intimidation and judgement that they bring.”

SNP women’s health minister Jenny Minto is expected to offer government backing to the Bill when she gives her evidence to the committee today.
