ACTIVISTS disrupted high end retailer Harrods chanting “they are eating all the cake, tax the ultra rich” to demand the government tackle wealth inequality ahead of nationwide protests today.

Members of Fossil Free London dropped a large banner from the central London luxury store’s main escalator reading “Tax the Ultra Rich” with an image of a cut cake representing the share of wealth of the 1 per cent and 99 per cent respectively.

Other protesters, dressed in Marie Antoinette-style outfits shoved cake into their mouths as part of the action on Thursday night in the first of series of rallies across the country marking Green New Deal Rising’s Pay Up day of action today.

Fossil Free London spokeswoman Joanna Warrington said that it “is no coincidence” that while “everyday people are struggling to get by, the ultra rich have never had it better.”

She called for wealth taxes to fund climate action and tackle political lobbying.

Harrods was contacted for comment.
