GREAT YARMOUTH bin and street cleaning workers will begin strike action next month over pay, Unite announced yesterday.

The Norfolk seaside town faces a “summer of rubbish” as some 100 Great Yarmouth Services employees walk out on August 6, 7, 10, 11 and 12.

The local authority, which owns the company, had offered a 3.3 per cent pay offer, but Unite, GMB and Unison are demanding a 20 per cent pay increase.

This would match their wages to staff doing the same jobs in nearby Norwich, Broadland and Lowestoft, said Unite.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “These workers are doing heavy smelly work in all weathers to keep Great Yarmouth clean and tidy. 

“Their current rate of pay is an insult and needs to improve. Unite is supporting these workers all the way in their fight for fair wages.”

The council was contacted for comment.
