VICTIMS of domestic abuse are to receive better support while their cases go through the courts, after £5 million of extra funding for a new scheme was announced by the government today.

Solicitor General Ellie Reeves said the Crown Prosecution Service would receive the sum over the next two years, aimed at supporting people who contact the police for help.

Ministers will reportedly target the funds at “the most serious” instances of domestic abuse.

The scheme will also allow victims to meet prosecutors before the start of crown court trials, allowing more time for questions about the legal process.

Extra victim liaison officer posts will also be created, the government said.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves promised this would mean victims’ “voices are heard” and would help prevent them dropping out of court cases.

“This offer is already available to victims of rape and serious sexual assault across the country,” she added.
