Germany sack Jones as national team coach
Germany’s Steffi Jones

STEFFI JONES was fired as manager of the German national team today following a string of poor results.

The 2016 Olympic champions finished last in the four-team SheBelieves Cup, which was won by the host United States last week.

Under Jones, the six-time defending European champions were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the 2017 tournament, losing to Denmark.

The German football federation (DFB) said that Horst Hrubesch, who coached the men’s team to the Olympic silver medal, will be the interim coach.

“The decision followed an intensive analysis of the previous months,” Oliver Bierhoff, the DFB’s director of national teams and football development, said. “Steffi Jones approached her job as coach with a great deal of commitment and dedication.”

DFB president Reinhard Grindel said: “For this, I thank her in the name of all of the members of the board … I would welcome her further involvement in the DFB and women’s football in some other function.”

Germany plays 2019 World Cup qualifying games next month against the Czech Republic and Slovenia.

Jones played more than 100 games for Germany before leading the organising committee when it hosted the 2011 World Cup.

She was assistant coach at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics before succeeding Silvia Neid.
