Five-goal thriller ends with Chelsea clinching quarter-final spot
Cesc Fabregas celebrates scoring for Chelsea against Derby

Chelsea clinched a place in the League Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night, as they saw off Frank Lampard’s Derby County .

Maurizio Sarri’s side will play Bournemouth in the next round of the competition.

Lampard, who spent 13 years as a Chelsea player, was given a rapturous welcome on his first return to Stamford Bridge as a manager since taking over at Pride Park.

Assistant first team coach Gianfranco Zola said of the draw: “You can see in this country in cup games teams can’t be underestimated. That’s the beauty of this country. We call it a friendly draw, but Bournemouth isn’t going to be easy.

“When we played them earlier in the season, they really caused us a lot of problems and they were unlucky.”

Derby, who eliminated Man Utd in the previous round, were the equal of their hosts in an entertaining first half.

However, Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas was the difference between the sides, scoring the crucial fifth of the goals after his side had twice taken the lead, only to be pegged back.

Lampard won 11 trophies during his time at the club. He was appreciative of the support he had received.

He said: "I'm so thankful to the Chelsea fans. I left through the back door and it upset me at the time, but I have nothing but great memories of this place and they thank me like that.

“I'm a lucky man to have a night like that and I feel it.”
