Inside the housing crisis: a report from an activist in Scotland’s tenants’ union

“SORRY, that’s not my department’s decision” — “I’ll put in a word in, mate” and the notorious “I’m just doing my job.” 

These lines have unfailingly been the deflections of housing officers and council bureaucrats alike, when negotiating with Scotland’s tenants’ union Living Rent (LR).

LR has strived to expand the dynamic of the labour movement outside of the workplace, recognising exploitation takes many forms: just as working conditions are not controlled by workers, housing conditions are out of the hands of tenants.
