GREAT BRITAIN’S Angharad Evans clinched gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke final on the third day of competition at the European Aquatics Championships.

The 23-year-old’s impressive summer in the pool continued after setting a new British and Championship record of 1:04.87 at the competition in Paris and finished 0.54 seconds ahead of Ireland’s Mona McSharry, who claimed silver.

It comes after Evans won two gold medals at this summer’s Commonwealth Games in the 100m and 200m breaststroke events.

In the women’s 400m individual medley final, Ellen Walshe secured a gold medal for Ireland with a time of 4:34.42 after narrowly beating Amalie Smith.

Only 0.70 seconds separated the pair and silver is a first individual senior European medal for the 16-year-old Smith.

Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen narrowly missed out on a podium place in the men’s 800m freestyle, finishing fourth in the final.

Great Britain were also unable to secure a podium finish after settling for fifth in the women’s 4 x 100m freestyle relay final.

A championship record was set in the men’s 100m freestyle final as Romania’s David Popovici claimed the top spot with a time of 46.56.

Wednesday night’s action saw plenty of British swimmers earn qualification for their respective finals, including Freya Colbert, who came second in her women’s 200m freestyle semi-final, 0.51 seconds behind Barbora Seemanova. British team-mate Leah Schlosshan finished in joint-fifth.

British duo Filip Nowacki and Gregory Butler finished first and second, respectively, in their men’s 200m breaststroke semi-final and Ireland’s Jack Kelly also reached the final with a fourth-placed finish in the other semi-final.

Italy’s Sara Curtis set a new world record with a time of 26.63 in the women’s 50m backstroke semi-final, which also saw Britain’s Lauren Cox and Ireland’s Danielle Hill clinch qualification for the final.

Elsewhere, Britain’s Edward Mildred booked his place in the men’s 100m butterfly final.
