DELIVEROO couriers in Manchester will strike today against pay cuts and poor conditions.
Up to 100 drivers for the delivery giant claim their pay has fallen in the past few months, and many say they are being forced to deliver outside of their allotted delivery zones for less money.
The drivers, who are members of the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) union, are demanding that they get paid £5 for every delivery and £8 for a double order.
They also want £10 an hour while waiting for orders, a minimum of £1 for every extra mile travelled, and no deliveries outside of their allotted zone.
The walkout, between 11am and 7pm, will be the second that drivers have taken after approximately 80 per cent of all Manchester Deliveroo drivers went on strike on Valentine’s Day.
Zahid, a striking driver in Manchester, said: “We are going on strike for at least £5 a delivery to cover the cost of living, and to provide for accidents and illnesses.
“Deliveroo refuses to provide adequate cover for illness incurred on the job, and the money we make per delivery is decreasing at a time when inflation increases. This must change.”
Deliveroo is refusing to meet the strikers.
IWW regional organiser Andy Nesbitt said: “We call on Deliveroo to listen and act on these demands and do the right thing by their riders, rather than childishly ignoring them.
“These riders make the company run, and their concerns deserve to be listened to.”
Deliveroo had not responded to requests for comment at the time of going to press.
