Climate protesters call for press reform as News UK window-breaking trial is postponed

ACTIVISTS urged the government to reform the press to ensure it tells the truth about the climate crisis today.

Five Extinction Rebellion members were due to head to trial, accused of conspiracy to commit criminal damage at the headquarters of News UK.

The charges relate to a protest in July 2022 in which two activists broke windows while three others fly-posted newspaper articles onto the building.

But due to an apparent overbooking by the courts, there was not enough space to hear the trial, and it has now been postponed to November 16 2026.

A spokesperson for Extinction Rebellion said: “This seems to have been an administrative failure by a legal system which has been stretched to breaking point.

“It’s time the government stopped persecuting those ringing the alarm on our broken system, and started fixing it instead.

“The case for media reform is more urgent than ever and we intend to continue make the case for this over the coming months.”

One of the alleged window-breakers, Caspar Hughes said: “The UK is awash with misinformation and omission when it comes to the basic facts about climate change.

“Titles like The Sun, The Times, Daily Mail, The Daily Telegraph and GB News are not only keeping their readers dangerously in the dark, but are also running a hostile misinformation campaign designed to slow action on climate change which will kill billions of people.

“The government needs to step in and reform the press so that everyone gets to hear the truth about the crisis and why we need to take urgent action.”
