CLIMATE activists are set to protest against the construction of “dirty data centres” tomorrow and Saturday in co-ordinated demonstrations around the country.
They have called out the ambitions of tech firms and the government to build hyper-scale centres at “the expense of local communities and climate.”
Organising group Global Action Plan demanded lawmakers bring in stronger environmental protections against these projects which will put strain on water and power supplies, delay housing projects and “jeopardise our move to clean power by 2030.”
They estimate that more than 100 data centres are planned around Britain, the largest of which would use double the electricity than all of Wales.
Global Action Plan’s Oliver Hayes said: “Giving big tech the power to monopolise our energy and water supply at the expense of our communities and climate, without any guarantee that these data centres will benefit society, is as reckless as it is foolish.”
