Broncos fan Taylor hopes to meet NFL heroes while on tour with England

SCOTT TAYLOR said yesterday that he is hoping to get the chance to rub shoulders with some of his heroes in the Denver Broncos team after earning a late call-up for England’s trip to Colorado.

The 27-year-old Hull prop earned a recall to the England squad for next Saturday’s ground-breaking game against New Zealand as a replacement for South Sydney’s George Burgess, who pulled out with a quad injury.

Taylor joined his Hull teammate Jake Connor and the eight-strong contingent from Wigan and St Helens on the flight from Manchester yesterday and spoke of his excitement at the prospect of running out at Denver’s Mile High Stadium.

“I’ve been a Denver Broncos fan for quite few years now,” he said. “I watch them on the telly all the time and I’ll be looking out for Case Keenum, Von Miller and Chris Harris.

“If someone had said a month or two years ago that I had a chance of playing at the Mile High Stadium, I would have laughed.

“If I do get that chance, it will be absolutely massive, something I’ll remember for a long time.”

Taylor played in the 2017 World Cup but was left out of coach Wayne Bennett’s initial 19-man squad.

“I was obviously gutted when I got the call saying I’d missed out, but, when [team manager] Jamie Peacock rang to say I was in, I was delighted,” he said. “It’s great being back around the boys today.”

England captain Sean O’Loughlin, who was in the Wigan team that gained a 14-10 win over Hull in the Super League on Saturday, welcomed Taylor’s return to the fold.

“Tag was a big part of the World Cup,” O’Loughlin said. “He’s been playing well for Hull this season and he brings lot to the team environment as well.”

England team manager Jamie Peacock has allayed fears expressed by NRL clubs over player welfare associated with playing a match at high altitude following a long-haul flight and in temperatures expected to reach 80 degrees.

“There are great protocols in place to make sure the players are well looked after,” he said. “I don’t think it will be an issue.”
