British charity workers describe ‘harrowing’ scenes inside Gaza Strip
Palestinians walk through destruction in Gaza City, November 24, 2023

THE head of a UK charity in Gaza has described witnessing scenes of horror and catastrophe.

Dr Aziz Hafiz, chairman of Humanity First UK, described victims  of Israel’s invasion as suffering untreated infections and injuries without “the most basic painkillers, antibiotics and dressings.”

The charity, one of the first to get into the enclave since the start of Israel’s murderous attack, has previously helped set up water desalination plants and rooftop gardens.

Dr Hafiz said: “As a GP myself, it’s incredibly frustrating and upsetting to see so many people suffer from infections, skin conditions and injuries, without access to the most basic painkillers, antibiotics and dressings.

“Food supplies are extremely limited and famine looms especially in northern Gaza — and as the winter draws in the internally displaced people face starvation and disease.”

Osman Dean, head of the charity’s emergency medical team, said: “The scenes inside Gaza are harrowing. In Rafah, the situation is becoming untenable.

“In just the first few hours of visiting the multiple informal campsites, it was horrific to observe the plight of the displaced people.

“I was in complete shock and my heart wept for the people of Gaza. No human being should be subjected to such suffering.”

Humanity First UK director of fundraising Yousaf Aftab visited a refugee camp west of Rafah.

“The lack of basic necessities is evident as I witness young people and children queuing for up to four hours for [unsafe drinking] water,” he said.

“The psychological trauma will be felt for years to come.”
