TEACHERS must keep up the struggle against the “disgust that deluded Tory ministers have for public service workers and build an education system fit for the 21st century,” the outgoing leaders of the National Education Union (NEU) said yesterday.

In an emotional valedictory address closing the union’s 2023 conference ahead of their retirement in the summer, joint general sectaries Dr Mary Bousted and Kevin Courtney thanked members for “so many great years” and predicted they will win the fight to save the austerity-hit sector.

This year’s meet-up in Harrogate saw members demand more strikes after overwhelmingly rejecting Westminster’s latest below-inflation and largely unfunded pay offer for educators across England in an online ballot last week.
