Scottish food workers have been left by their employer to use food banks after the company collapsed
Food laid out in crates at a food bank in north London

FOOD WORKERS in Scotland have been abandoned by their employer and left to use foodbanks to survive after the company collapsed, their union said today.

The Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) called for action by the Scottish government to help 200 workers made redundant at the Dawnfresh factory at Uddingston, outside Glasgow.

The union said that the victims included a father of two children who has leukaemia.

The company has been taken over by administrators and the workers have received no redundancy pay, the union said.

BFAWU general secretary Sarah Woolley said: “It is disgusting how badly the workers at Dawnfresh have been treated.

“I am furious at how the company has behaved and left these workers without pay and redundancy and left them dependent on crisis grants and foodbanks to pay their bills and get food.

“This situation is now an emergency, and it requires an emergency package of support from the Scottish government and greater coordination to help people between the government, councils and other public agencies.”

Dawnfresh was approached for comment.
