ADAM AZIM has backed Conor Benn to beat Chris Eubank Jnr on Saturday and plans his own statement win to remain on track to fight Dalton Smith in 2026.
British light-welterweight Azim will put a frustrating nine-month period behind him at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when he faces last-minute opponent Kurt Scoby.
Azim had been expected to fight on the undercard of the first Benn versus Eubank Jnr encounter in April before a proposed bout in June collapsed, but despite Zaur Abdullaev’s failure to get a visa, Scoby stepped in to ensure the undefeated Slough boxer can get in the ring.
It gives the 23-year-old an opportunity to back up his excellent ninth-round stoppage of Sergey Lipinets for the IBO belt at Wembley Arena in February.
If Azim can claim the 14th victory of his career, it will keep him on collision course for an eagerly anticipated bout with Smith where two world titles could be on the line if Sheffield’s Smith beats WBC champion Subriel Matias.
“Yeah, I’m very grateful to get an opponent secured and I’m feeling good. I’m feeling ready to rock and roll,” Azim told the PA news agency.
“I am ready to put on a great performance, get a great statement win and show what I am about in front of a massive audience.
“That Dalton Smith fight, it is not long [away]. Hopefully both of us get in the ring and put on a great stadium fight.
“He has a big fight coming up himself, so I wish him all the best of luck and I want him to win.”
Smith and Azim were first ordered to fight for the European title 21 months ago, but there is more belief an all-British bout can be finalised in 2026.
Azim added: “No, I reckon it happens. If everything goes well on both sides, hopefully we get the fight on next year and put on a great show.”
After Azim was ringside to watch good friend Benn and Eubank Jnr produce a classic in April, he is excited to be on the bill this time and positive the son of Nigel Benn will have his hand raised.
“I was there watching the fight and the atmosphere was electrifying,” Azim reflected.
“I know Conor Benn really well. He is a good friend of mine. I do want him to win the second one and he is definitely going to win the second one.”
