Train drivers vote to continue strikes for another six months

TRAIN drivers’ endorsement today of another six months of strikes show their “determination to win,” Aslef has said.

The rail union repeated calls for employers to reopen talks after its members voted by massive margins for more walkouts across England and the London Underground in a year-long dispute over pay, jobs and conditions.

Chiltern, East Midlands, Northern and TransPennine Express services now face strikes into the new year, while nearly nine in 10 of the union’s members at c2c voted to down tools for the first time on a whopping 85 per cent turnout.

Tube services in the capital are also set for further disruption after more than 90 per cent of workers who participated in four ballots backed further action in a related dispute that involves a fight to protect pensions.

Aslef general secretary Mick Whelan hailed the results as showing the “determination of our members to win this dispute.

“That’s why I am calling on the train companies and the government that stands behind them to return to the negotiating table and prevent more disruption,” he said.
