AROUND 50 protesters gathered outside of Aintree Racecourse on Saturday as the Grand National took place, calling attention to animal welfare concerns linked to the event.

The demonstration was organised by Animal Aid in partnership with Merseyside Animal Rights Campaign and Team Tino Animal Rights. Protesters held placards highlighting what they described as the plight of horses involved in racing, alongside signs commemorating horses that have died at the Grand National in recent years.

The protest also served as a tribute to Ralph, a well-known and respected member of Merseyside Animal Rights Campaign, who recently passed away. Fellow campaigners described him as “an absolute legend” who was deeply committed to opposing horse racing, particularly at Aintree and the Grand National.

Organisers said the turnout reflected ongoing concern among campaigners about the welfare of horses in high-profile races, as well as a determination to continue raising awareness in Ralph’s memory.
