Up to 300 injured Gazan children set to receive NHS treatment in Britain

UP TO 300 children could be evacuated from Gaza and given NHS treatment in Britain under new government plans expected to be announced within weeks, according to reports.

Each child would be accompanied by a parent or guardian, with siblings also permitted to travel if necessary.

The Home Office will carry out biometric and security checks before departure, the Sunday Times reported.

The scheme will run in parallel with an initiative by Project Pure Hope, a private group working to bring sick and injured Palestinian children to Britain for treatment.

More than 50,000 children are believed to have been killed or injured in Gaza since October 2023, according to Unicef.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said last week that Britain was “urgently accelerating” efforts to bring injured children over for treatment.

A government spokesperson said: “We are taking forward plans to evacuate more children from Gaza who require urgent medical care, including bringing them to the UK for specialist treatment where that is the best option for their care.

“We are working at pace to do so as quickly as possible, with further details to be set out in due course.”

It comes as Britain has asked Israel to change course and allow more aid into Gaza, stop annexing land in the West Bank, agree to a ceasefire and sign up to a long-term peace process over the next two months.

Last week the PM announced that Britain would recognise a Palestinian state in September, ahead of the United Nations general assembly’s 80th session, if Israel does not meet these demands.
