Yemen: Battles grind on despite Houthi backing for truce

FIGHTING between Yemeni forces and the Saudi-led invasion coalition continued yesterday despite the country’s Houthi movement backing a US-proposed ceasefire.

The Republican Guard and the Houthi Popular Committees said yesterday they had recaptured most areas lost earlier to coalition forces in south-western Taiz province.

Coalition jets carried out two air strikes on the Serwah district of Marib province overnight on Wednesday, while others were reported in the capital Sanaa and northern Saada.

Fighting continued in Taiz city, while Yemeni artillery fired on army posts in Saudi Arabia’s south-western Najran region, where the Houthis have advanced to the outskirts of the provincial capital.

Late on Wednesday, Houthi spokesman Mohammed Abdel-Salam said said the Houthis backed the armistice negotiated with US Secretary of State John Kerry in neighbouring Oman on Tuesday.

The truce was immediately rejected by the Saudi-based puppet government of former interim president Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi.

The peace plan sidelines Mr Hadi, transfers his authority to a newly appointed vice-president and calls for the formation of a power-sharing government.

Also on Wednesday the recently formed Supreme Political Council government in Sanaa extended an existing amnesty offer to “mercenaries” loyal to Mr Hadi for a further two months.
