Iraq: Security chief trio sacked after latest sectarian massacre

IRAQI Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi sacked three Baghdad security officials yesterday, a day after Isis claimed a new sectarian massacre in the city of Balad.

The heads of military operations, the security services and intelligence in the capital were sacked for failing to prevent a car bombing that killed at least 186 people.

One anonymous official condemned “accumulated mistakes that cannot be overlooked.

“The car bomb came from outside the capital, crossing dozens of checkpoints before reaching the target. All of them answer to the operations command,” they said.

Security forces were still using fake bomb detectors flogged to Iraq by British firm ATSC for more than £55 million.

Fraudster James McCormick was jailed for 10 years in 2013 for selling the devices — £15 novelty items for finding lost golf balls — to Iraq for £10,000 each.

Mr Abadi ordered police to bin the useless objects following the Baghdad carnage.

On Thursday night Isis attacked the mausoleum of Sayyid Mohammed in Balad, a site holy to Shi’ite Muslims whom the death cult considers infidels, killing at least 37 and injuring 62.

Three suicide bombers and nine gunmen attacked the shrine, targeting security forces and civilians gathered inside to celebrate Eid al-Fitr, the end of Ramadan. Mortars or rockets also struck the site.
