Argentina: Macri takes the helm as lurch to the right looms

ARGENTINIAN President Mauricio Macri was sworn in yesterday, heralding free market “reforms” and a surrender to US vulture funds.

Republican Proposal (PRO) candidate Mr Macri was elected last month in a run-off vote against the Front for Victory alliance’s Daniel Scioli, former head of the Peronist Justicialist Party of outgoing president Cristina Fernandez.

Mr Macri vowed to be be a president “who listens more and talks less,” but he plans to cut spending on social programmes that slashed poverty during 12 years of rule by Ms Fernandez and her late husband Nestor Kirchner.
