Venezuela: Telefonica probed after text backing for demos

VENEZUELAN President Nicolas Maduro has ordered a probe into a Spanish-owned mobile phone network’s support for regime-change protests.

Mr Maduro said on Thursday night that Movistar, a subsidiary of Spain’s Telefonica — which also owns Britain’s O2 — had “sent millions of messages to users every two hours” in support of Wednesday’s marches that left three people dead.

“I denounce Movistar de Venezuela and have asked for an investigation because they have joined the calls for a coup in the country and that is not their function,” he said.
