BRITISH judoka Chelsie Giles’s hopes of making the Olympic podium again were ended by a golden score defeat to Brazil’s Larissa Pimenta today.
Giles, bronze medallist in Tokyo three years ago, went out in the last 16 of the -52kg category, much to her obvious disappointment.
“It was just a very tactical game, I’ve fought her several times before,” said Giles.
“It started off a bit slow and I picked up two shidos.
“When it went into golden score [sudden death overtime], I thought I was doing a bit better.
“Then I just got unlucky and got caught off the wrong side. There’s not much I could have done, I just got caught.”
Giles’s defeat came as a blow to Team GB’s five-strong judo squad at Paris 2024.
The 27-year-old from Coventry was fancied to contest the medal positions after becoming European champion and winning world silver since Tokyo 2020.
