THE Welsh government and 24 MPs have demanded that Prime Minister Andy Burnham “move away from cruel, unevidenced restrictions on eligibility” for disability benefits or “poverty-inducing cuts,” urging him to reject the “politics of division and suspicion.”

Campaigners welcomed an open letter to the PM yesterday, which “clearly articulated” concerns over the forthcoming Timms Review into Personal independence Payments (Pip).

Disabled People Against Cuts Cymru (DPAC Cymru) echoed the letter’s demands over plans to restrict benefits for under-22s and recent cuts to Motability and Universal Credit Health.

A DPAC Cymru spokesperson said: “Pip cuts last year were defeated by protests.

“That should be a warning to the UK government to start listening and stop insulting us with sham ‘co-production,’ when it’s nothing of the sort.

“We need an independent review, democratically led by disabled people and our organisations, otherwise ‘Pip2’ will end up failing us just like Pip is.”

Protests are planned in Cardiff on September 25 and in Bangor on September 30.
