PRIME Minister Andy Burnham was urged to schools properly as NASUWT declared an emergency in education in a campaign launching today.

New polling by the union has shown schools facing “unprecedented” challenges with seven in 10 teachers warning theirs needs more funding to provide quality teaching and learning.

Two in three reported cuts to in-classroom support from teaching assistants while two in five warned their schools are giving classes to more than one year group despite official projections of just a 1.3 per cent drop in primary pupils in 2027-28.

Launching the Fix Our Future, Fund Education campaign, NASUWT general secretary Matt Wrack said that Britain’s 4.1 per cent of GDP spend on education is near the lowest it has been since the 1960s. 

“Andy Burnham may have bold ideas about new technical education but we still don’t know if this will mean extra funding,” he added.
