SOUTH AFRICA: Prosecutors have withdrawn fraud and corruption charges against criminal intelligence chief Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo and six other police officers, it was reported at the weekend.

He and his colleagues were arrested in June 2025 over the allegedly unlawful appointment of a civilian to a key post within the intelligence unit. They denied the charges and were not suspended.

TUNISIA: A boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of southern Tunisia, killing at least two people and leaving 12 missing, Tunisia’s national guard said. One survivor was rescued.

Guard spokesperson Houssem Eddine Jebabli told national radio Mosaique FM that about 15 people were believed to be aboard the boat when it took off between the cities of Zarzis and Ben Guerdane.

UNITED STATES: The editor-in-chief of US military newspaper Stars and Stripes told the BBC of his concern over censorship a day after being dismissed by the US Department of Defence for “insubordination.”

Erik Slavin says he believes he was fired for having stated in an interview that “in a hypothetical situation, censorship would be a red line.” A reporter and the paper’s publisher were also sacked.

The Pentagon has not commented on the accusation.

CHILE: Hundreds of activists took part in protests in the capital Santiago and many other cities on Saturday against the removal of environmental protections by the new right-wing president, Jose Antonio Kast.

The protesters were also opposing plans by President Kast to allow the hunting of sea lions, which environmental groups say would benefit the salmon farming industry and increase industrial trawling.
