INDIAN authorities were foiled in their attempt to raid the offices of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Tuesday.

Delhi police attempted to enter the offices to arrest Aishe Ghosh, the former president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union.

Ms Ghosh was one of the prominent activists in the recent so-called “Cockroach” movement protests across India.

The police reportedly came in a private vehicle, some without uniform and left when questioned.

In a post to social media, the CPI(M) said it strongly condemned “this unlawful action and stands firmly with the students fighting for justice, education and democracy.”

The CPI(M) said: “This brazen intrusion into a political party office and the continuing witch hunt against student protesters expose the Modi government’s escalating assault on democratic rights. Instead of addressing the legitimate concerns of students, the state is using police power to intimidate, silence and criminalise dissent.”

The Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which organised mass protests over exam paper leaks, said hundreds of students had been detained or “harassed” by police.

The raid comes as hundreds of people who took part in the protests have faced arrest despite government pledges.

The CJP have threatened to restart the protests if the arrests do not stop and those detained are not released.
