MEN’S CRICKET: Shimron Hetmyer hit a measured 69 not out to lead the West Indies to a two-wicket victory over New Zealand in the final leg of their five-match one-day series in Bridgetown today. 

Chasing 268, the Windies crossed the line with 15 balls to spare. 

Tom Latham had earlier top-scored with 69 for the Kiwis. New Zealand won the series 3-2 to retain their rank as the world’s second-best 50-over team behind India.

COMMONWEALTH GAMES: Nine days of bowls and para bowls action start at the Scottish Exhibition Centre Thursday morning as Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games officially open. 

All 74 members of the Commonwealth are expected to take part, with Togo and Gabon making their debuts in this year’s scaled-down event. 

Glasgow replaced the original Australian hosts after the Victorian state government pulled out in July 2023 due to excessive costs.

The New Saints get their second chance after crashing out of the Champions League, with a trip to Estonia’s Flora and Motherwell host Faroese outfit Havnar Boltfelag.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: The Humberside derby opens the latest round of Super League fixtures Thursday evening with defending champions Hull KR crossing the river to face neighbours Hull FC. 

Both teams are struggling for form with Hull KR outside the play-off top six after losing their last two games and Hull FC just one place off the bottom of the table. League leaders Leeds are not in action until Sunday when they host Bradford.
