NIGERIA: An armed group has killed at least 20 people in a community in the north-central region.

Sunday’s attack occurred in the Kawel community in the Bokkos area of Plateau state, police spokesman Alfred Alabo said in a statement on Monday.

Officers quickly arrived at the scene and exchanged gunfire with the assailants, forcing them to retreat, Mr Alabo said.

No arrests were reported. and no group immediately claimed responsibility.


EUROPEAN UNION: A delegation from the Afghan Taliban was set to travel to Brussels today for rare closed-door talks with EU staff that re expected to focus on deportations, a Taliban official said.

Human rights groups said the meeting would undercut EU human rights obligations and could endanger people in Europe and Afghanistan.


ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres called on AI companies today to release information about the carbon pollution they create, along with the water and land used to power their operations.

Mr Guterres said the firms should also commit to powering their facilities with electricity produced with renewable technologies, such as wind and solar power, by 2030.

He told an independent climate conference: “No more shifting the burden onto those least able to bear it. It is time to come clean.”


NIGER: The west African country has formally left the International Criminal Court, accusing the judicial body in The Hague of selective justice.

In a letter submitted to the United Nations on Monday, triggering the withdrawal process, Niger said: “While the court had raised great hopes among peoples who cherish peace and justice, it has been misused and exploited.”
