THE FBU has demanded a Holyrood debate on Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) cuts it says “undermine democratic accountability.”
Published this week, the SFRS’s Service Delivery Review includes recommendations to downgrade or close a host of stations throughout the country, despite 80 per cent of respondents — including members of the public, parliamentarians, councillors and unions — voicing opposition.
Demanding a Holyrood debate before next week’s recess, FBU Scottish secretary John McKenzie said: “These cuts are a direct result of repeated budget cuts.
“The SFRS has already lost around 1,250 jobs since its formation in 2013.
“The FBU is clear, cuts to existing fire cover will lead to greater risk to lives, property and the natural environment.
“Is it any wonder public confidence in the political process is at an all time low when the public are treated in this way?
“It would be an outrage if these issues were not debated in Scotland’s national Parliament.”
A Scottish government spokesperson said: “The SFRS Board will consider the review on June 22, until then, no decisions have been taken.”
