CLOSING “gaping loopholes” in Britain’s energy windfall taxes could cut bills and prevent “obscene” profits driven by the US’s war on Iran, the Scottish Greens said today.

The party’s co-leader Ross Greer urged the Westminster government to introduce a “far stronger windfall tax on excessive fossil fuel profits, one without the gaping loopholes of the current system.”

“That money could then be used to support people struggling with their bills and to speed up the transition to cheap and clean renewable energy,” he added.

“People need lower bills, a stable climate and long-term energy security, not more half-measures riddled with loopholes.

“We cannot continue allowing our economy to be dictated by companies whose business model depends on wrecking the planet and profiting from war.”

Energy giants have raked in more than £26.2 billion in the first three months of the year, including around £3bn from Britain alone, according to the End Fuel Poverty Coalition.
