SNP call on Sarwar to back bid to oust Starmer
Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, speaking during an eve of poll rally at Adelaide Place Baptist Church in Glasgow, May 6, 2026

THE SNP has called on Scottish Labour MPs to back its bid to force a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister.

SNP chief whip Kirsty Blackman has made a direct plea to Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, who has publicly called for Sir Keir Starmer’s resignation, to whip his MPs to back the SNP amendment to the King’s Speech.

The Aberdeen North MP said: “Anas Sarwar has repeatedly failed to act on his opportunistic election stunt call for Keir Starmer to resign in February.

“At every opportunity that Sarwar has had to put his call into action, and actually remove the Prime Minister, he has chickened out.”

Arguing that Mr Sarwar has just “one more opportunity to act,” Ms Blackman added: “The question is, will he back the vote of no confidence or will he keep Starmer in post and allow this Westminster circus to go on and on?

“Anas Sarwar must finally put his money where his mouth is and whip Scottish Labour Party MPs to back a vote of no confidence in Keir Starmer or his empty words will amount to nothing.”

She added: “After taking the Scottish Labour Party to their worst ever result, this could be one of Anas Sarwar’s final acts as leader. He must do the right thing.”

While Scottish Labour has yet to comment, Labour MP for Alloa and Grangemouth Brian Leishman told the Star: “There’s no-one in Scotland in any doubt where I stand on Keir Starmer. I’ve called for him to go, that is the right thing to do and I stand by that.

“But I will not be voting for the SNP’s amendment. The stakes are too high and the issue too important for me to play along with SNP stunts.”
