Sport in brief: April 7, 2026

ICE HOCKEY: Three Manchester Storm players have received fines for fighting after the first period and at the end of their recent 4-3 home defeat to the Nottingham Panthers. Josh Tetlow and Jarold Hilderman from the Panthers were also sanctioned for fighting alongside both managers, who were charged with failing to control their squads. The teams will meet again in this weekend’s two-legged play-off quarter-finals. 

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Bourg-en-Bresse have home advantage when they face Turk Telekom Ankara in tomorrow evening’s deciding leg of their EuroCup semi-final. The Turks romped to a 99-71 win in the first leg before going down 73-76 in the second match. Tonight’s winners will face Istanbul’s Besiktas in the final after they eased past city rivals Bahcesehir College over two legs. None of the remaining clubs have previously won the trophy.

SPEEDWAY: Dan Bewley was in outstanding form as Manchester’s Belle Vue Aces earned a 97-83 aggregate win over Leicester Lions in their Premiership Cup double-header on Bank Holiday Monday. 2025’s World Championship bronze medallist won all five of his heats as the Aces cruised to a 57-33 victory in the early afternoon home leg. He then bagged 17+1 points from six rides in the evening’s 50-40 defeat at Leicester. 

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Sporting Braga and Real Betis meet for the first time ever when they kick off the Europa League quarter-final first legs tomorrow. Aston Villa are in Bologna tomorrow evening when Freiburg meet Celta Vigo and FC Porto, the highest-ranked team left in the tournament, host Nottingham Forest. Porto currently top the Primeira Liga while Forest sit just three points outside the Premier League’s relegation zone.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Keira Barry and Niamh Charles have been called up to Sarina Wiegman’s England squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Spain and Iceland.

It is a first senior call-up for Bay FC forward Barry, while Charles, with 31 caps, has recently returned to Chelsea action following an injury layoff.

Wiegman’s squad will play World Cup holders Spain at Wembley on April 14 before taking on Iceland in Reykjavik on April 18.

WOMEN’S CRICKET: England’s Sophie Ecclestone has had her return to top of the ICC’s one-day international bowling rankings cut short — with Alana King regaining the the title after just four days.

Left-armer Ecclestone had held the number one spot for nearly four years before Australia leg-spinner King moved ahead last month.

England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt remains her country’s top-ranked batter, unchanged in fourth.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Hull FC today confirmed head coach John Cartwright will leave the club at the end of the 2026 Super League season.

The 60-year-old took over at Hull City Stadium at the start of the 2025 campaign and helped the club to a seventh-placed finish, their highest finish since 2020.

Hull have reportedly already started the process of hiring a new coach from the 2027 season onwards.
