ICE HOCKEY: Cardiff Devils thumped Sheffield Steelers 5-0 on Wednesday evening to move into second place in the Elite League, 11 points behind Belfast who celebrated the successful defence of their title with Scott Conway bagging a hat-trick in a 7-4 victory over Coventry. The other mid-week fixtures saw third-placed Nottingham score a last-minute winner to edge out Manchester 2-1 and Dundee lose to Glasgow 4-0.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Super League’s rivals weekend kicks off at lunchtime tomorrow with the Hull derby before St Helens host table-topping Wigan in their traditional Good Friday fixture. Bradford take on Leeds tonight for the first time in the top tier since 2014. Saturday sees bottom of the pile Huddersfield up against York, Warrington face Leigh and Catalans meet Toulouse before Wakefield round things off on Sunday with a visit to Castleford.

CYCLING: Italy’s Filippo Ganna overhauled home favourite Wout van Aert in the final metres to win the men’s Dwars door Vlaanderen semi-classic one day race in Belgium on Wednesday. Soren Waerenskjold was third with Sam Watson the highest placed Briton in 26th. Switzerland’s Marlen Reusser out-sprinted Demi Vollering to take the women’s title with Lieke Nooijen third and Britain’s Zoe Backstedt 7 seconds behind in fourth.

MEN’S CRICKET: The new County Championship division one season begins tomorrow with defending champions Nottingham in Taunton to face Somerset while last year’s runners-up Surrey are at Edgbaston to play Warwickshire. Newly promoted Leicester begin their campaign against Sussex, fellow new-boys Glamorgan host Yorkshire at Sophia Gardens and Hampshire, who only escaped relegation by one point last time around, meet Essex.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Manchester City defender Mayzee Davies returns to the Wales squad for a World Cup qualifying double-header against Albania after suffering an ACL injury in May 2025. Olivia Clark misses out through injury and uncapped pair Lucy Farrell-Shrouder and Poppy Soper join Manchester United’s Safia Middleton-Patel as head coach Rhian Wilkinson’s goalkeeping options. Wales host Albania at Wrexham on April 14 before travelling to play the same opponents in Elbasan four days later.

WOMEN’S CRICKET: Tom Smith has joined England Women as an assistant coach with a focus on spin bowling. The former left-arm spinner took nearly 400 wickets across all formats during his playing career with Sussex, Surrey, Middlesex and Gloucestershire. Smith joins Charlotte Edwards’s coaching group ahead of a bumper summer of international cricket which includes the Women’s T20 World Cup on home soil, a first women’s Test match at Lord’s, and white-ball series against New Zealand, India and Ireland.

WOMEN’S TENNIS: Iga Swiatek announced Francisco Roig as her new coach today. Roig, who previously coached Rafael Nadal, was appointed Emma Raducanu’s coach last summer, but the pair split in January following her defeat in the second round of the Australian Open. The 58-year-old’s appointment comes after world number four Swiatek parted ways with Wim Fissette in the aftermath of her Miami Open exit in March. Swiatek posted a picture of herself with Roig on her Instagram story with the caption: “Welcome to the team Francisco! Very excited for this new chapter.”
