Defender insists squad still fighting ahead of pivotal Atletico clash in Europe
MEN’S FOOTBALL: Three more English clubs are in the hunt for Champions League quarter-final places tomorrow evening. Newcastle are level at 1-1 with Barcelona before their tie at St James’ Park while Atletico Madrid take a 5-2 lead into the game at Tottenham and Liverpool need to overcome a 1-0 deficit when they face Galatasaray at Anfield. Tonight’s other match sees Bayern Munich holding a 6-1 lead over Atalanta.
SPEEDWAY: Dan Bewley kicked off the new speedway season by winning the Peter Craven memorial trophy in damp conditions at his home Belle Vue track on Monday night. Bewley finished ahead of Sheffield’s Chris Holder and team-mate Brady Kurtz in the six-man final after Holder had qualified with the only unbeaten record. Ipswich’s 2017 world champion Jason Doyle was fourth with King’s Lynn’s Max Fricke fifth and Adam Ellis sixth.
MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: St Helens winger Kyle Feldt has been fined and suspended for three games after making dangerous head contact in a tackle on Krystian Mapapalangi during their 32-8 Challenge Cup last 16 win at Castleford. Five other players including Saints centre Mark Percival, Ethan Havard and Adam Keighran from Wigan and Leeds Rhinos loose forward Callum Watkins also received fines for foul play after the weekend’s fixtures.
MEN’S FOOTBALL: There were only eight goals in Monday night’s League of Ireland fixtures and seven of them were in one game, when Galway came from behind to beat bottom of the table Waterford 4-3. Bohemians remain three points clear at the top after a 0-0 draw with Shelbourne in Dublin’s northside derby, second-placed St Patrick’s were also goalless against Derry, Dundalk edged Sligo 1-0 and Shamrock Rovers drew 0-0 at Drogheda.
