ITALY’S Prime Minister Georgia Meloni has condemned the bombing of a primary school in Iran, widely attributed to the US.
The strike on the Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school in the city of Minab killed at least 175 people, mostly seven to 12-year-old girls, on February 28, the first day of the US-Israeli was on Iran.
Speaking in the Italian Senate today, Ms Meloni said: “I express my firm condemnation of the massacre of girls at the school in Minab, southern Iran.
“Responsibility must be ascertained for the massacre of girls,” she said. “The safety of civilians and children must be protected.”
Ms Meloni, an ideological ally of US President Donald Trump, told senators that Italy would not be joining the war and also appeared to say that the US and Israeli have broken international law.
“It is within this context of crisis in the international system — where threats are becoming increasingly alarming and unilateral interventions carried out outside the framework of international law are multiplying — that we must also place the [US] and Israeli intervention against the Iranian regime,” she said.
Shajareh Tayyebeh girls’ school primary school is located about 200 feet from an Islamic Revolutionary Guard naval base, which was also completely destroyed by US missiles that morning.
The US and Israel haven’t outright denied responsibility for striking the school, but have repeatedly claimed that their militaries do not target civilians.
Footage emerged last week showing what weapons experts identified as a Tomahawk missile hitting the ground near the school on February 28. The US is thought to be the only force in the conflict to use Tomahawk missiles.
On Monday, Mr Trump said: “In my opinion, based on what I’ve seen, [the attack] was done by Iran … They’re very inaccurate, as you know, with their munitions. They have no accuracy whatsoever. It was done by Iran.”
Meanwhile, Spain permanently withdrew its ambassador to Israel on Tuesday as a diplomatic standoff worsened between the two countries over Spain’s opposition to the US-Israeli attacks.
