Major protests to take place as campaigners warn against war on Iran
MAJOR demonstrations will be held outside the US embassy and at RAF Fairford today amid growing fears Donald Trump’s war on Iran will kill hundreds of thousands of people.
Campaigners warned that Britain was at a “dangerous turning point” as the US-Israel bombings of Tehran continues to escalate.
PM Sir Keir Starmer’s claims the US can only use British bases for so-called “defensive” bombings will be branded “nonsense” by Your Party leader Jeremy Corbyn MP, who is set to speak outside the embassy in central London.
Stop the War Coalition national convener Lindsey German said: “We are at such a dangerous turning point and must redouble our efforts to oppose Trump’s wars, to call for an end to our government’s support for them and to stop arming and backing Israel.
“Keir Starmer knows the US and Israel are waging an illegal war on Iran, but the fact is Britain is deeply involved.
“That’s why this is such an important demonstration in building a movement in this country as strong as the Palestine movement, as strong as the opposition to the Iraq war — one that rejects a world based on barbarism and Trump’s gangster imperialism and instead builds one based on peace and justice.”
US President Trump said there would be “no deal” with Iran except “unconditional surrender” today as Israel’s military claimed to have destroyed a military command bunker in Tehran with 50 fighter jets in a new wave of attacks.
The US and Israel have continued to batter Iran with nationwide strikes and in turn, Iran has kept up retaliatory strikes across the region.
It has led to thousands of Brits fleeing, with some 4,000 returning on commercial flights, before the first government-chartered plane landed at London Stansted early today.
And the Foreign Office has confirmed that a second British-chartered flight carrying stranded nationals from Oman has taken off.
Stop the War, Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), Muslim Association of Britain, Palestinian Forum in Britain and Friends of Al-Aqsa will lead a national demonstration to the embassy from midday on Millbank.
An emergency demonstration at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, meanwhile, will oppose the airbase’s use by US long-range nuclear-capable bombers.
CND general secretary Sophie Bolt slammed “the nuclear hypocrisy” of the bombings, as Defence Secretary John Healey declined to rule out British aircraft taking part in strikes on Iran.
He made the comments as he met his counterpart in Cyprus on Thursday to ease tensions about Britain’s response to drone attacks against the island.
Deputy PM David Lammy has also said it would be legal for RAF jets to strike Iranian missile sites which could target Brits.
Ms Bolt warned “these reckless, illegal attacks on Iran by the US and Israel are dragging the entire Middle East and beyond into a catastrophic war.
“While Starmer has said he won’t allow British military to be engaged in an illegal war, it is British bases like RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall that have been central in the buildup to this aggression. Now British jets are protecting Israeli airspace and shooting down Iranian drones.
“We demand an end to the illegal bombing of Iran and an end to the escalation. Starmer needs to stand up to Trump. He needs to shut down all these US bases that are putting Britain on the front line.”
Polling shows the public in Britain and the US are against Trump’s war on Iran, with more than 30,000 people having signed Your Party’s statement calling on Sir Keir to reject the “illegal war of aggression.”
In a message to be read outside the US embassy, Jeremy Corbyn MP will say: “We oppose the genocide in Gaza for the same reason we oppose the illegal war against Iran. That is because we believe in the self determination of all peoples to decide their own future, and to live in peace.”
The former Labour leader is in Amsterdam with The Hague Group — an historic meeting of 40 states which seek to hold Israel accountable for its genocide in Gaza — over the weekend.
He will add: “War is not a game. It has real-life human consequences — and Israel and the US must be held accountable for their crimes.
“This week, our Prime Minister said he was allowing the US to use UK bases to strike Iran. He tells us these are defensive strikes only.
“What nonsense. A bomb is a bomb — and however our Prime Minister describes these strikes, human beings will mourn the deaths of their loved ones all the same.
“In 2003, hundreds of thousands of us protested against the illegal invasion of Iraq. We were ignored. We are here today to say loudly and clearly: do not drag Britain into another illegal war.”
