THE people of Cyprus oppose the use of British bases on the island in any conflicts in the region, according to Cypriot communists.
In a statement published on Monday, the Progressive Party of Working People (Akel) said: “The recent attack on the British bases on our island confirms the dangers that their presence poses to Cyprus and our people.
“We call on the government to convey to the British government that Cyprus and its people oppose any kind of military involvement of the bases in any conflicts in the region.”
Akel said the use of the bases during the Gaza conflict and now the US-Israeli war against Iran reinforce their “demand for the dismantling of the British bases on our island.”
The party added that “the government must ensure that the infrastructures of the Republic of Cyprus will not be used for any military operations and attacks in the region,” warning that the conflict with Iran “poses unpredictable dangers for all the peoples and states in the region, including Cyprus and its people.”
Akel said it supported the call by United Nations secretary-general Antonio Guterres for a diplomatic solution to the Iran conflict.
It also welcomed assurances given by President Nikos Christodoulides that the country is not involved in any military operations in the region.
