Sport in brief: February 23, 2025

ICE HOCKEY: Defending champions Belfast enjoy a six-point Elite League lead with a game in hand after a 2-1 win in Cardiff and 7-0 thumping of Dundee. Sheffield are now second despite losing a leg of their double-header with Guildford. Coventry won 4-2 at Dundee and squeezed past Manchester 2-1 in overtime, Nottingham edged Cardiff 2-1 after a shoot-out and bottom club Fife lost 4-1 at Glasgow before winning the return 6-5.

WOMEN’S RUGBY UNION: Saracens took full advantage of Gloucester-Hartpury not having a fixture by thumping Exeter 45-7 to move top of the English Premiership on points difference, but Gloucester do now have a game in hand. Sale claimed a surprise 15-12 win over Harlequins, Bristol came from behind to edge out Loughborough 24-21 and Leicester remain without a win from their opening ten games after slumping to a 40-19 defeat at Ealing. 

CYCLING: Two roadside spectators were killed and six others injured during the Tour of Rwanda’s opening stage on Sunday when a race support vehicle crashed into the crowds. The peloton was unaware of the incident until after the race that was won by Itamar Einhorn, riding for the new Spain-based NSN Cycling team. Finlay Tarling was the highest placed Briton in 23rd, just ten seconds off the pace.

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Unbeaten Glasgow City moved five points clear at the top of the Scottish Premier League after they won 4-0 at struggling Motherwell and Hearts slipped to a 5-3 defeat at Celtic. Rangers squeezed past Montrose 2-0 to climb into second, Sienna McGoldrick scored with the last kick of the game to give Partick a 3-2 win over bottom club Hamilton and defending champions Hibs cruised to a 4-0 victory in Aberdeen.
