Sport in brief: January 30, 2025

NETBALL: England are 1-0 down when they face South Africa in Saturday’s second leg of their three-match series at Ellis Park, Johannesburg. Despite leading by a point at the start of the fourth quarter the English went down 52-48 in Thursday’s opening game. South African defender Sanmarie Visser, who recently signed for Leeds, was player of the match. England are ranked as the world’s fourth best team, one place above South Africa.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Saturday’s FA Trophy fifth round sees three-time winners Woking and AFC Telford up against Walton and Hersham and Yeovil while 2023’s champions Halifax host Kidderminster. Chatham, the lowest ranked team left in the cup, meet Southend. Scunthorpe face Horsham, Wealdstone are at Forest Green, AFC Fylde and Southport clash in a north west derby and Tamworth take on Marine. All winners receive £6,000 in prize money, losers £1,750.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: Defending champions Caledonia Gladiators face Sheffield Hatters in Sunday’s Betty Codona Trophy final at Birmingham’s national indoor arena. Sheffield were last season’s play-off winners and the two teams currently sit first and second in the Super League with Caledonia boasting the competition’s only unbeaten record. Sheffield lost out 76-71 in November’s league match at East Kilbride’s Playsport Arena.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: The second round of Championship fixtures kick off this weekend with phoenix club Salford at Barrow on Saturday evening. Salford went down 44-0 at home to Oldham in their opener while Barrow thumped Workington 40-0. Oldham are at Plough Lane on Sunday to face a London team that beat Widnes 44-12 in Reagan Campbell-Gillard’s first game since the former Australian international moved from the NRL.
