Starmer weekend blues worsen after Welsh FM interview

PM could be ejected from Downing Street if Welsh Labour loses Senedd elections in May, First Minister says

First Minister of Wales Eluned Morgan speaks as Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer during a visit to a engineering workshop at Coleg Menai in Anglesey, November 13, 2025

SIR KEIR STARMER’S weekend blues worsened today after Wales’ First Minister warned he could be ejected from Downing Street if Welsh Labour loses the Senedd elections in May.

Eluned Morgan also said there was a “danger” that the United Kingdom could break up in the future if May’s elections lead to nationalist leaders holding power across all the devolved authorities.

The First Minister was speaking on Sky News Sunday morning and said: “I do think there will be pressure on the Prime Minister, inevitably, if Labour performs badly.”

The polls are pointing to the end of Labour’s 26-year dominance of Wales since the Senedd was established in 1999.

YouGov polling of Senedd voting intentions earlier this month found that 37 per cent of the Welsh public plan to back Plaid Cymru at the May election, while 23 per cent have said they will vote for Reform.

Welsh Labour languishes in fourth place at 10 per cent, behind the Greens at 13 per cent.
